Mother’s Day is right around the corner and in honor of this special holiday, we will be giving all mothers who bring their child in for an appointment this Thursday flowers! We’re also running a promotion for free clear braces the whole month of May, so don’t forget to ask us about it next time you’re in the office.
We believe it’s so important to celebrate mothers because they do so much for their families all year long. They continuously fill their homes with love and have a fierce dedication to their children. What would we do without the loving, supportive, and understanding moms in the world?
We asked our orthodontic assistant, Natalie, to share some of her favorite memories with her mom and she had a lot to choose from but the one that stood out is their tradition of baking together. Her mom’s baking was so good that the whole family would gather around the bowl of cake batter to get in on the yummy leftovers! The best advice Natalie has ever received from her mom has been to always choose happiness. She’ll be celebrating her by pampering her, cooking a delicious dinner, and spending some quality time with her.
The older we get, the more we appreciate everything our moms did and continue to do for us. They take care of us like no other and we’re convinced that life would be a terrible place without a mother’s love. We hope you all have a wonderful Mother’s Day with your loved ones!

The merry month of May also happens to be National Fitness and Sports Month, so take advantage of the warmer days to get outside and exercise! Bringing a friend, family member, or coworker with you when you go for a brisk walk during a lunch break can provide an opportunity to socialize as well as health benefits. If you need a little more motivation, here are some good reasons to stay active and fit.
Exercise provides:
- Improved stamina and energy as well as toned muscles and bone strength and density
- Improved circulation and breathing for a healthier heart and lungs
- Reduced risk for Type 2 diabetes and certain forms of cancer
- For older adults, regular exercise may help improve balance and reduce the risk of falls as well as improved cognitive abilities
Children and Teens
Children and teenagers spend long hours at their desks in school, on the computer, watching television, and involved in other sedentary activities that result in obesity and poor health later in life. Getting them engaged in school or community sports teams can help them form good life-long exercise habits. A gym membership is nice but not necessary to stay fit; try these easy ways to work some exercise into your daily routine.
At Home
- Take a friend along for company on a walk through your neighborhood.
- Pursue gardening or other yard work, including mowing or raking.
- Take your kids on a bike ride or have them push a baby stroller around the block.
Couch potatoes take note: simply moving from the sofa to the floor for some sit-ups, leg-lifts, or push-ups while you’re watching television can help you get in better shape in no time.
At Work
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Take exercise breaks for walks around the building or parking lot.
- Walk or ride a bike to work.

Sometimes real life is stranger and more interesting that any made-up story. These weird and interesting facts about braces will amuse you … and make you glad you didn’t have to get braces “way back when.”
Mummies with braces: Archaeologists have discovered mummies with crude bands of metal wrapped around their teeth. The metal was wrapped around each individual tooth, and it is believed that ancient dentists used catgut to guide the teeth and close the gaps.
First “official” braces: The first official braces were constructed in 1728 by Pierre Fauchard. They consisted of flat strips of metal. String was used to connect the metal to the teeth.
Early rubber bands: In 1850, Tucker began making rubber bands out of rubber tubing.
Brackets are better: Brackets were invented by Edward Angle in 1915. They were not bonded to the teeth directly, but instead were attached to bands that went around the teeth.
Wiring by NASA: As braces have become more modern, the technology has improved by leaps and bounds. You may know that some braces wire contains nickel titanium. What you may not know is that this metal was developed by NASA and has special shape memory that is activated by pressure or body heat.
Over 60 with braces: Actress Faye Dunaway got braces at the age of 61, which shows you are never too old to look more fabulous!
Oh, and one more thing that didn’t quite make our list, but is interesting all the same. Did you know that almost 25 percent of patients who get braces have to get them again because they wouldn’t wear their retainers? So suck it up, buttercup, and use that retainer!
